*Most Clematis fall into pruning catagories. They are classified as Group 1, 2, or 3.
*Group 1 Care- Flower in spring only on growth from the previous year. Pruning is
optional. If you it os getting too large for the space it is in, cut the clematis back
within 1 month after it is finished blooming. Old woody plants can also be pruned hard at
this time to 1-2 feet. Although it may 1-2 seasons for it to begin flowering again.
**Group 2 Care- These begin to bloom in early summer on last seasons growth.
Second flowering appears on new growth. The time to prune is late winter, early spring.
Dead and weak stems should be removed and remaining shoots cut back to 6-9" above a
few well developed buds.
***Group 3 Care- These start to bloom in midsummer, and also on new shoots, in early
fall. Although difficult to prune, all shoots can be cut back to previous years
growth , just above the base of the plant. This is necessary to avoid a bare stem, that
has a messy tangle of stems above it. If the cultivar blooms early , those flowers will be
eliminated, but it will bloom later. It can also be pruned in stages. Each year cut 1/3 of
the stems back to 6-9" above some well dveloped buds . Small flowered varieties only
need to be pruned when they get too
