Perennial Plants is a reference for gardeners who want plants that come back year after year. We publish clear, research-backed growing guides for the perennials worth planting, and practical advice for keeping them healthy through every season.
What You Will Find Here
Every page on the site is built to answer a real gardening question quickly and accurately, then give you the detail you need to act on it.
Plant Profiles cover individual perennials in depth: hardiness zones, sun and soil, height and spread, planting, care, the best varieties and the problems to watch for. Each profile opens with a Quick Facts table so you can check the essentials at a glance.
Plant Care guides explain the techniques that apply across the garden, from when and how to plant to mulching, pruning, dividing and getting perennials safely through winter.
The Plant Finder narrows the list to perennials that suit your garden, filtered by hardiness zone, sun, height, bloom season, flower color and deer resistance. Our Hardiness Zones pages help you find your zone and see what grows there.
How We Research
Gardening advice online is often repeated from site to site without anyone checking it. We take a different approach. Key facts in our articles, such as hardiness zones, mature size, bloom time and pet toxicity, are checked against authoritative sources: university extension services, botanical gardens and arboretums, government agencies and nonprofit organizations such as the ASPCA. Our newer articles end with a list of the sources we used, so you can check our work.
We do not cite retailers or link to other gardening sites as sources. You can read more about how we write, check and update articles in our Editorial Standards.
Written for Real Gardens
Our guides are written for home gardeners across the United States and Canada, from the cold winters of zone 3 to the long summers of zone 9. Where advice changes with climate, we say so, and we give temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius where it helps.
